You Don’t Go Backwards in Life, You Always Move Forward

Updated: Jul 5

I think I was in high school when I first paid attention to my mama saying you don’t go backwards in life, you always go forward. This quote was deposited in me and I have been able to capitalize off it ever since.

Enforcing Moving Forward

I remember hearing it in my head and saying it out loud in a prayer when I purchased my first property in December 2006…my one-bedroom/bath condo. I was so nervous yet excited. I was nervous because it was the first time I would be living on my own, paying all the bills, and being a 100% independent responsible adult. After closing, I prayed and asked God to help me maintain my new home that He had blessed me with. ’Mama said I don’t go backwards in life, only forward, so I need You Lord to help me to always move forward that I don’t lose this place and have to go back to live with my parents’…that was my prayer. This was one area in my life I knew I needed to pray to move forward. Is there or has there been a specific area in your life where you felt the need to pray for forward movement?

I did the same with other successful opportunities of moving forward in life, such as relocating to Arizona and other blessings. My home purchase in Phoenix would be another example of a more recent blessing where I prayed the same prayer. I made sure to include in that prayer to keep me moving forward in life.

Forward & Backwards Empowerment

It’s empowering to move forward like climbing a mountain to reach the top. Have you ever gone hiking on a mountain? When I first moved to Arizona that was one of the first things I did. It was not easy, but every step that I took kept me ascending higher up the mountain giving me a sense of “I can do it” to make it to the top. After persevering up the mountain and reaching the top, there was a beautiful view of the city that was well worth the struggle to get there. I also had a sense of accomplishment because there were indeed moments during the hike up that I wanted to turnaround and go back(wards), but I endured through the struggle to reach the top.

Would coming down the mountain be considered a form of going backwards? I believe it still is a form of moving forward depending on the setting or situation. In this case it required me to go back, but not backwards. The goal was reached to go up and the remaining part of that goal was to come down.

Keeping the momentum to move forward can be easy sometimes, yet other times it can be a challenge. Life circumstances and situations come about that are most times out of our control, but practicing prayer, patience, and a positive mindset has always helped me stay motivated.

What are some ways you motivate yourself to keep moving forward?
